We are beginning the 2nd semester of school at Winfield Elementary School, and you will notice that the curriculum will become more demanding. Here are some suggestions that may be helpful in ensuring that your child continues to be successful:
Please be sure that your child is well rested. Kindergarten and first grade students usually need 10-12 hours of sleep.
Provide a variety of healthy foods for meals and snacks.
Eat together as a family. Don’t rush through meals.
Please be sure that your child is dressed for the weather.
Check folders and book bags for notes and homework assignments.
Establish open lines of communication with your child’s teacher.
Show interest by asking your child about his/her favorite school activities. Listen to what your child says about school.
We hope that your child has a wonderful 2nd semester. Please find some important dates below:

The end of the first semester of the 2009-2010 school year is approaching rapidly. It is hard to believe that our children have almost completed half of the school year. With that thought in mind, I would like to offer some thoughts that could mold and shape the success and character of your child. Our school system’s administrators recently had an opportunity to participate in a live web seminar that addressed the importance of school attendance. The information that was shared was pertinent to all school systems in Alabama. Did you know that each day of absence from school dramatically reduces the likelihood of a child from eventually graduating? This is a chart that was shared with our system during the presentation.
Absences in relation to graduation
0-4 days-87%
5-9 days-63%
10-14-41%
15-19-21%
20-24-9%
25-29-5%
30-34-2%
35-40-1%
The next item that was addressed was when do students get off track. The answer was that many students develop chronic attendance issues in elementary school, and a pattern of non compliant behavior begins. This also leads to course failure. How do we make this information relevant to Winfield Elementary School? I would encourage all parents/guardians to discuss the importance of good attendance patterns with their children. In a time of H1N1 and the regular cold and flu season, it can be difficult not to be affected in some way. Students that are having these types of health issues do not need to attend school. However, the lesser non-essential tummy aches or “I don’t feel good” must be attended to even though it may be a tearful event between child and/or parent/guardian. Students are much more likely to succeed in life if patterns of structure and discipline are instilled at a very early age. The faculty and staff of Winfield Elementary School would like to partner with you in developing habits of good attendance, firm but fair discipline, and a structred environment that builds character and integrity in all of our children.

The Winfield Elementary School Fall Festival will be Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 4:00-7:00. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy an evening of fun and entertainment.
